You may find that you are producing loads of saliva and drool! This is known as 'ptyalism' (don't pronounce the 'p") . It is usually associated with nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, but can happen even if you are not having morning sickness. You may find that you spit more when talking, or just seem to have loads of saliva in your mouth, which you are unable to swallow, and need to spit out regularly. It usually resolves itself by the end of the first trimester, but some women find it an irritating problem right until delivery.
- Eating dry crackers may help.
- Drink lots of water to help you swallow the saliva. Taking sips may help.
- Suck mints, or other hard sweets.
- Chew gum.
- Keep lots of tissues with you during the day, or even disposable cups (with a lid) you can spit into!!
